Description:
Cornus mas is a cold hardy dogwood known as Cornelian cherry or cornel that is both ornamental and edible. It blooms with airy clusters of golden flowers on bare branches in early spring followed by early-ripening, sweet, juicy, pear-shaped, aromatic fruit that tastes like a cherry or a wild plum. 'Red Star' yields large crops of 1.25 inch long, oval-shaped fruit. Trees reach 8-10 feet tall and wide. Fall colour includes yellows and reds. Grow in the sunny to part shade garden. Great for fresh eating, preserves, juice and wine. Plant two varieties for cross-pollination. Attracts birds and bees.
