Galtonia viridiflora looks like a green version of the better-known G. candicans with elegant late season spikes of lightly scented, pendulous, downward-facing, bell-shaped, snowdrop-like flowers. Cut flowers will last 10-14 days. This species has now been moved into Ornithogalum which means 'bird's milk'. Although the root words are from Greek, "bird's milk" was a phrase frequently used by the Romans to indicate something wonderful which this bulb certainly is. Native to South Africa but widely adaptable.

Native Habitat: Northern and Western Cape provinces of South Africa, where it is native to vleis, sandy flats, lower mountain slopes and in disturbed ground. Although it is a Cape winter rainfall species, it grows well in gardens in the summer rainfall region.
