Wand flowers or African corn lilies are exotic South African iris relatives that produce spikes of beautiful flowers in a range of bold colours. Usually listed as zone 9, it has survived many winters in the Victoria area planted 5-6 inches deep in gravel. Ixia are also easy to grow in containers in colder regions.
