Zanthoxylum piperitum, the Japanese pepper, is a deciduous, aromatic, spiny shrub or small tree with small, yellowish green flowers and scarlet fruits. The dried fruits are ground and commonly used in Japanese and Korean cuisine. This species has separate male and female plants. Unfortunately, our plants are seed grown so we don't know their sex. Buy two and take your chances or buy more to increase your luck. The flowers of both males and females are also edible.
